• RAW MATERIALS •

We offer a wide range of dry clays for your convenience if you already have a certain recipe that you like. We do not carry any form of slip but we do have all the dry materials for you to mix your own.

BALL CLAYS
Ball clay is an essential ingredient to most clay recipes and are also used in some glazes. They are fine-grained; so much so that they are very difficult to handle alone. This is a clay of high plasticity and strength when dry. Ball clays fire out pale in color with a high shrinkage rate. They also assist in vitrification process during firing.

FIRE CLAYS
Fire clays are mainly used in refractory mixtures and as a body component. These clays will fire buff to a light brown. Fire clays are highly refractory, non-plastic clays that when added to clays will help them stand during hand-building and throwing.

GROG
Grog changes the working properties and introduces texture of a fine or coarse nature to the clay body. There is also a white grog known as molochite. Grog decreases dry and fired shrinkage in the clay body. High amounts of grog can make the moist clay less plastic. Grog is classified by the particle size. The lower the number grog, the larger the grog particle size.

Flint grogs can be used for vitrification, glaze fit, and dry shrinkage functions. They cause a loose feel as the moist clay is being formed on the wheel.

SAND
Sand will assist drying and decrease shrinkage; it is not as effective as grogs. Sand can also be used as an abrasive sprayed under pressure to pierce or 'carve' porcelain.
