• MOIST CLAY DESCRIPTIONS • 

LOW FIRE  Cone 06 - 02
WHITE EARTHENWARE
A smooth clay body; good for the wheel and hand building. A favorite for teachers and students. Fires white.
RED EARTHENWARE
Fires red-orange to red-brown at higher temperatures. Good for wheel and hand building.
TERRA COTTA
Fires orange-red to red-brown at higher temperatures. Lots of grog- good for hand building and larger wheel pieces.
RAKU
Made to withstand the thermal shock associated with the raku firing process. Toothy body with brick grog and kyanite. Good for wheel and hand building. Blushes at lower temperatures. Speckled reddish buff at cone 10 in reduction.
WHITE RAKU
Fires white and is slightly smoother than the raku clay body but still has brick grog and kyanite for strength. Good for wheel and hand building. Great for transparent crackle raku glazes.  Textured grayish tan at cone 10 in reduction.

 

MID FIRE  Cone 4 - 7
BROWN
Toasty brown for a gas fired look in electric, smooth body good for throwing, medium grog.
BUFF
Great for wheel, medium to smooth body, nice light brown, medium grog.
DEEP RED
Responsive like a red porcelain, throws like smooth stoneware.
RED
Good toothy body, looks like high fire reduction in oxidation, medium grog.
WHITE
A smooth clay, throws well and give a good response with color, fine grog.
CONE 6 PORCELAIN
A good throwing medium range porcelain.  Great with Cone 6 electric celadon glazes.
 
HIGH FIRE STONEWARE   Cone 8 - 11

FOOL'S GOLD

Smooth as porcelain, throws like stoneware.  Rumored to possess magical properties for those potters that know how to use magic.  Fires off white in oxidation, gray in reduction.

WHITE STONEWARE

A smooth throwing clay with great response.  Fires off white in oxidation, light gray in reduction.

STONEWARE

A good solid stoneware with tooth.  Fine brick grog and fireclay make this great for durable functional ware.  Fires light gray in oxidation, deep earthy gray in reduction.

SCOTT'S BODY

Another good solid stoneware with some Redart added for body color.  The most popular of our stonewares.  Light creamy buff in oxidation, warm and deep reddish brown in reduction.

A-1 SCULPTURE BODY

A high fire stoneware with brick grog and kyanite added for extra strength needed in larger or outdoor pieces.  Great for slab building or wheel work.  Fires buff in oxidation.  Speckled reddish brown in reduction.

 
HIGH FIRE PORCELAIN   Cone 8 - 11

CONE 10 PORCELAIN (Frank Neef's Body)

The workhorse of porcelains.  Very plastic. Great for throwing, carving, and growing crystals.  Fires white in oxidation, light gray in reduction. 

SNOW

English Grolleg body that is still plastic and fires white in oxidation and reduction.

TRANSLUCENT

English Grolleg body that is very white and will be translucent if thin enough.  Beautiful with celadon glazes.
